Launch of new campaign at Runnymede
On 15th June 2022, the 807th anniversary of Magna Carta, English Cabaret launched their plans for A Magna Carta Progress, which will run until the 75th anniversary of ECHR in 2025, celebrating, educating, and protecting fundamental rights and freedoms with performances of song cycle Dreams of Peace & Freedom. A Crowdfunder for the ongoing project, was launched at 8.07 on the day.
Runnymede – birthplace of Freedom under the Law, and site of Magna Carta monuments was a fitting setting to announce a Progress centred on a show that tells the story of the birth of human rights through the eyes of David Maxwell Fyfe, leading British prosecutor at the Nuremberg Trials and artisan of the ECHR, and created and performed by his members of his family.
Coincidentally on the very same day, the European Convention came under scrutiny from the government as action by the European Court of Human Rights delayed the first refugee flight to Rwanda. The Magna Carta Progress emphasises the repeated need to protect human rights and fundamental freedoms over the centuries in England, and Dreams of Peace & Freedom and its wrap-around educational materials at our sister site Kilmuir Papers, will provide a vital perspective and source of information during this ongoing debate.
